The signing of the contract to finance the Center of Excellence for Desalination Technology (CEDT), in the 13th of July 2008, marks its official launch, which has been appointed by the decision of H.E. the President of King Abdul Aziz University for launching the Center in the 1st of September 2008.

The establishment of CEDT at King Abdul Aziz University matches ambitious strategic plan of the university to become a leading research institute. It also represents an ideal location for CEDT due to the following reasons:

The availability of faculty members, graduate students, and experienced technicians.
Located within KAU are some unique departments, colleges and scientific centers such as the Department of Thermal Engineering and Desalination Technology, Department of Chemical and Material Engineering, Faculty of Marine Sciences, Faculty of Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture, Water Research Center, and Center of Excellence in Environmental Studies.
KAU possess several laboratories and equipments related to water desalination such as multi-stage flash (MSF) pilot plant, reverse osmosis (RO) desalination lab., steam supply station, direct contact heat transfer lab., water pretreatment and brine mining pilot plant, water analysis facilities, corrosion testing laboratory and other related facilities.
KAU has two sea sites located along the Red Sea coast in Jeddah and Rabigh.
